Elite Extreme Fighting : Feb 10, 2007

On February 10, 2007 MMA fans were treated to the first MMA fights on a premier channel. Showtime brought us the Elite Extreme Combat. Showtime which is known for its boxing shows has brought MMA fighting into your living room. In its inaugural fight, fans were treated to some of the best fighters in the sport today. To ensure more action in the fights Showtime introduced a 15 second rule. If there is no action in a fight for fifteen seconds the referee would restart the fighters from the standing position.

In the first fight which was not televised. Tim Persey defeated Bo Cantrell using his knees and a left hook to score a knock out in the first round.

In the second fight also not televised, Mike Pyle defeated Ross Ebanez using a rear naked choke in the first round.

In the third fight (Not televised) Javier Vazquez defeated Adriano Pereira. This was the first fight to go the distance with Javier winning by split decision.

In the fourth fight of the evening (Not televised), James Edson Berto defeated John Shackelford. Berto won by way of TKO in the second round after repeat striking Shackelford on the ground.

In the fifth fight (Not televised) Riki Fukuda made short work of Chris Gates. Fukuda used his ground and pound to end the fight in the first round.

In the sixth fight and the first one televised for the fans at home Charles “Crazy Horse” Bennett defeated Karl James Noons. Crazy Horse, who is known for his wild fighting and antics in the cage, entered the arena while talking on a cell phone.

In the first round Noons throws several leg kicks with Bennett answering with a few of his own. Noons appears to have the better kicks. Bennett gets punched by Noons and returns a few punches himself. Bennett goes in with a left body shot and then lands a right on Noons chin. Noon goes down and Bennett jumps on top and lands two more punches before the referee stops the fight. Bennett wins at 3:43 in the first round.

 

In the seventh fight world Mauy Thai boxing champion Gina Carano fought Julie Kedzie.

Round 1

Carano has the better stand up and lands several good shots on Kedzie. Kedzie tries several take downs but is unable to take Carano down. Kedzie pulls guard and Carano lands two good shots. Both fighters back to their feet and Carano lands a kick and a couple of punches to Kedzie’s head.

Round 2

Carano lands a kick and Kedzie gets the takedown. Kedzie has a better ground game then Carano. Both fighters back on their feet and Carano tries to land a head kick but Kedzie counters with a right cross. Carano lands several leg kicks and punches. Both fighters end up on the ground as the round ends.

Round 3

Kedzie gets Carano to the ground. Kedzie exposes Carano’s weakness by showing much better skills on the ground. Carano gets back to her feet and punches Kedzie several times. Carano scores a takedown of her own before the round ends. Carano wins by unanimous decision.

 

In the eighth fight Joey Villasenor fought David Loiseau.

Round 1

Villasenor gets a takedown on Loiseau and works the top control using his elbows. After a delay in the action Herb Dean restarts the fighter on their feet. Loiseau tries some punches but gets taken to the mat by Villasenor. Villasenor appears to be able to take Loiseau to the ground at will. Villasenor sinks an arm bar but Loiseau rolls out of it.

Round 2

Villasenor again appears to be able to impose his will on Loiseau. Villasenor goes back to the ground and ends up on top of Loiseau. Villasenor uses his elbows on Loiseau. Referee starts the fighters on their feet. Villasenor takes Loiseau to the ground. Loiseau tries the turtle position, starts to get and is put back on the ground again. Villasenor lands more shots and the round ends.

Round 3

Loiseau comes out kicking. Villasenor appears content to fight it out with Loiseau while standing. Villasenor lands a good body shot while Loiseau is putting everything he has into his kicks. Villasenor lands a good hook to Loiseau. The fight ends with Villasenor winning by unanimous decision.

 

In the ninth fight Antonio Silva fought Wesley “Cabbage” Correira

In the first round Silva scores a takedown on Cabbage. Silva lands several shots while on the ground. Both fighters are back on their feet. Silva lands a knee to Cabbage’s head. Cabbage goes down from the shot and Silva starts his ground and pound until the referee stops the fight. Silva wins at 3:49 of the first round.

In the main event of the evening Renzo Gracie fought Frank Shamrock. The long feuds between these two families are to be settled in the cage tonight.

Round 1

Shamrock lands a couple of kicks and Renzo clinches and works a takedown against the fence while Shamrock lands small punches to the back of his head. Renzo gets side mount. Referee restarts the fighters on their feet due to lack of action. Shamrock appears to have the better stand up lands a knee and right hand. Renzo gets another takedown. Shamrock tries to hold on while on the ground and stall until the referee will restart them. Renzo gets side control and lends a few elbows as the round ends.

Round 2

Renzo attempts a shoot in but stuffed. Renzo continues to try and gets shamrock to the mat. Renzo gets side control and is working for position on a submission when Shamrock lands two knees to the back of Renzo’s head while the ground. Herb Dean takes a point away from Shamrock while Renzo is given time to recover. Renzo is unable to recover and Renzo Gracie wins by disqualification of Shamrock in the second round.

After the fight Renzo is found to have suffered a concussion. Shamrock feeds fuel to the fire of their dislike for each other by saying that he came to fight and that Renzo was losing and took the easy way out. I had Renzo wining both rounds in the fight.
